Long flights are very draining…with layovers and deducting the time difference it takes me approximately 16 hours to get to Venice. That’s not counting how long I’m actually up…if you count the waking hours it’s more like 24 hours. And I can seldom count on sleeping on the plane. But I love it so much it’s worth it. Since I live on the west coast of the US it takes about seven hours just to get to New York….not even leaving this continent.
You’ll do it some day.
And I checked…I was 36 when I first took a trip to another continent….and that was to the UN International Women’s Conference in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985! I did it big the first time.
Oh thats the best way – do things big or stay home ๐ Lets see if I can find my big reason to go to, lets say, Big Apple (which is the closest of the long distance places).
Actually the process of long flights you described is exactly why I havent done it yet. For me a 2.3 hour flight to Venezia is bad enough (I know, sounds like nothing compared to 16 hours but still torture enough and the last one was absolute disaster).
Two to three hours to Venezia! Oh, you poor thing….she says with her tongue in her cheek.
Okay, I admit, a bad flight is a bad flight and I said many years ago that I understand why they call the place where you have to wait for your flight a “terminal”.
When I fly to Venezia I usually fly Seattle (over the pole) to Amsterdam then on to Venezia. Although overnight on the first one since I can’t afford anything but coach I’m usually surrounded by loud people or very wiggly ones so don’t get any sleep.
Okay, the first time to Venezia I was way too excited to sleep.
And with only your three hours…you really, really don’t have much jet lag. Doubt if you’ll ever make it to Hawaii from there….that’s a six hour flight for me.
๐ yeah yeah yeah, I know, I should be ashamed of myself ๐ And you are absolutely right about the jet lag, but Ive to say that the main thing that annoys me is that sometimes get so nervous for no apparent reason. If I can get over that then Im all good.
As for Venezia – I always say I could walk over there on foot if that should become necessary ๐
Hawaii sounds really good. Maybe if I somehow got my butt over there I could finally make my friend’s dream come true and visit her in New Zealand.
I have calmed down more jittery people on flights. I seem to have no fear of them….except for getting delayed and missing the plane.
And if you want to visit New Zealand you should go the other way around I think it would be closer to you…..wait, I’m checking my globe….and it just about equal distance (as the proverbial crow flies) from Riga to New Zealand whether you go east or west (and south of course).
Some day you will do it.
And yes, Hawaii would be really nice just about now although I’m having unseasonable warm weather and things are beginning to bloom that probably shouldn’t for another month or so.
See? I just cannot win in this long distance travel thing (and the possibility of having to change 5 planes on my way to NZ doesnt help one bit).
I just read that winter has ran out of cold here as well. That will make it easier for me to wait for the proper spring to arrive as constant grey sky that makes light ridiculously monotone + tonns of snow + terrible cold = absolutely depressing time.
Once upon a time, many years ago (probably before you were born) I lived near Palm Springs, California, USA.

But you live close to many wonderful places and I was in my late 30’s before I made it to another continent.

True, Europe is a real box of jewels. What keeps me from other continents are the long flights. But maybe one day I will manage to cross the ocean.
